STEP THREE: "A dim-witted French burglar"

On the evening of 1st June, a not-so-smart/ careless / brainless / dim-witted / stupid  French burglar broke into  a modern, 2-storey house in Paris. He first started stealing gold and silver things in the warm living room.  Then, just as he was going to leave, his stomach began rumbling. So he peeped into the fridge and saw his favourite blue cheese, sat down and ate it quickly /  devoured it drooling. While he was enjoying his meal, he remembered the two expensive, cold champagne bottles to drench his thirst.
((He was thirsty, so he drank two bottles of champagne.)) After that/ Afterwards / Later, he felt so tired that he decided to take a quick/short nap. Unfortunately, he fell sound asleep. The next morning, who woke him up? A snickering  French policeman who tapped on sleeping-beauty’s shoulder.
